This is the 2nd Sunday of the Seven Signs series. Our study will center on Jesus cleansing the temple in John 2:13-22.
Jesus was angered at what he saw happening in the temple. This is the place that God chose to dwell among people. The prophets foretold that God’s Servant would have zeal for his house (Ps. 69:9), and he would come into the temple to return a genuine worship to God (Mal. 3:1-5).
Now, God has come. Jesus Christ is fully God, the temple that dwells among us and is approachable by all who will come. The stone temple would be destroyed as would Christ. However, the true temple, Christ, rose to life, and by His life we can have true life. He is the once and for all sacrifice for us to approach God.
God is with us in Christ Jesus. How should we respond? Consider Jacob’s response when he saw heaven open up: “Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.’ And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place!’” (Gen 28:16-17). Jesus is ‘this place’. How awesome is He!
