When the church performs the Lord’s Supper, and the church body partakes in the elements, it is proclaiming the gospel. Paul told the Corinthians “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26).
Jesus is the bread of life given by the Father (John 6:33-35). Responding to his disciples who struggled to understand that eating of Christ’s flesh and drinking his blood was the means of eternal life (John 6:60-61), Jesus clarified by saying eternal life is not obtained by physical means, such as eating and drinking, but that “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63).
When we partake we are proclaiming the Lord’s death, not obtaining it. Our salvation is obtained and secured for the Christian by the strong and able grace of God.
This first Sunday of 2014 we proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that He died and rose to life so that we might share in His resurrection.
Living He loved me
Dying He saved me
Buried He carried my sins far away
Rising He justified freely forever
and He’s coming again one glorious day!
Here are the songs will sing this Sunday!
