Advent Devotions for the Family

The Christmas season is near and  catches no American family by surprise. It’s coming is preceded by flashes of Black Friday sales and thunderous stampedes of bargain shoppers. That is what this time of year has become to American culture at large, but it is obviously not the point of this December celebration. Let us focus on Christ.

There are two advent devotions I want to recommend.

1. Good News of Great Joy – John Piper

This is a daily Advent devotional reading for free, either to print as a PDF, or for download on e-readers. It is designed to focus the reader on Jesus Christ from all parts of the Bible: the Gospels, Epistles, and Prophets.

2. The Expected One – Lifeway, content by The Church at Brook Hills

This daily Advent devotional is an app for your smartphone or tablet running iOS or Android. Content in this app will also drive the reader to focus on the fist coming of Jesus Christ, but it is designed for families. This app includes passages of Scripture, devotional readings, and suggests songs for the time of family worship. It is $.99 in the App Store and Google Play.

Have a Merry Christmas!

UPDATE – The John Piper devotional mirrors his yearly devotional Solid Joys. This is a great devotional available via web format, or on your smartphone as a free app from iTunes and Google Play.
