How can a person be joyful in a time of pain? Furthermore, how can people give praise and glory to God when they are being persecuted for their belief in Him? Trials and suffering in this fallen world are as common to the Christian as to the non-Christian, but the Christian has reason to experience joy. The Christian’s joy securely rests in the finished work of our savior God: Jesus Christ.
Christ’s death and resurrection did not guarantee escape from pain, nor did it promise improved circumstances in our trial. Rather, Jesus has become the way of salvation through this life. Praise God, though we cannot earn favor from God, favor was earned for us and given to those who believe in Christ.
Now that the power of sin is removed (Rom. 6:1-23), we are free to worship and enjoy a relationship with God. Now that death has lost its sting (1 Cor. 15:55), we are free to worship and enjoy a relationship with God whatever it may cost or whatever trial we experience.
